What’s Under Your Rug?

May 7th, 2007 · 1 Comment

I saw the floor around the large area rug, there was about a foot of floor exposed all the way around it. The floor had a few minor problems, nothing that a little bit of sanding wouldn’t take care of. But when we decided to move the furniture around and remove the area rug, we found somewhat major problems. I alluded to one of them in another post here.

So far I have dug out major (almost requiring surgery!) slivers from my feet. What you don’t want to do is come sailing into the office here with your stocking feet, it is worse than being barefoot. Somehow the slivers manage to grab that sock and drive home Godzilla slivers.

I put that plastic mat (the one that made all those hole marks in the floor finish) back into the room right onto the floor over the major slivered area. I figured it didn’t matter as the floor has to be redone anyway and the slivers were dangerous. The rug has already been hauled away by the garbage man.

My cell phone was ringing the other night and I ran in here to answer it (in the dark) and tripped over that large, plastic, devil-mat and came crashing into the desk. That mat had seen its last day.

I tried wood putty on some of the floor but it made a poor, ugly repair. There are just so many areas that need help. If I lifted the slivers up and tried to break them off, they just became deeper and bigger. I tried gluing them down but that didn’t last. I tried sanding them and that helped on the shallow splinters but not the deeper ones.

I did try something that looks like it is going to work perfectly but it was the wrong color. I had to mail order some more product to get the right color. When it comes, and if it looks like it is going to work long term, I’ll take step by step pictures and show you how I did it. (I just know it is going to work beautifully without having to have any professionals come or pay out any big bucks.) See part of my floor below. Notice the previous owners actually taped down the splinters, I got a chuckle when I lifted the rug and found the tape.

Ouch, I know what you mean! My floors are red oak downstairs and in dire need of refinishing. Last January I slipped while wearing socks and drove in a 2 1/2 inch sliver. It came out in three sections over six days. It had already gotten infected by the time the last piece worked its way out. It was so weird–each time I was sure the whole piece was out.
